The Building’s History and Restoration

The Vandergriff Building is an adaptive reuse development of Arlington’s oldest commercial structure. Historic preservationists consider the Vandergriff Building, located at 255 N. Center Street to be the only intact, pre-1930 commercial building in Arlington, Texas. Built in 1927, the building’s original use was as a Chevrolet dealership. Located in what was then called the “Auto Isle” of Arlington, The Vandergriff dealership sold Chevrolets in an area dominated by new car dealerships until the mid 1960’s when population shifts forced their relocation. Today, following its redevelopment, the building once again contributes to the economic life of downtown Arlington.

A Look into the Past

The Vandergriff Building, located at the center of Division and Center Streets in downtown Arlington, Texas, is a historic landmark with a rich legacy. Built in 1927, it stands as the oldest commercial structure in Arlington and has played a pivotal role in the city’s development.

A Century of History

  • 1927: Opens as Thannisch Chevrolet, a full-service car dealership.

  • 1937: W.T. “Hooker” Vandergriff relocates his GM dealership to the building. Hooker Vandergriff chose Arlington over Longview, anticipating the growth of Dallas and Fort Worth into a megacity.

  • 1951-1977: Tom Vandergriff, Hooker’s son, serves as Arlington’s mayor. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in attracting major developments to the city.

  • 2008: Completion of the full restoration of the Vandergriff Building, positioning it again as a centerpiece of downtown Arlington.

  • 2010: The building is named to the National Register of the Historic Places.

The History of the Fountain

Arlington’s history also includes the famous fountain, which was once a central gathering place. Although the fountain itself was removed in 1951 due to traffic concerns, a memorial was erected during the city’s centennial celebration in 1976. This memorial now stands at the Levitt Pavilion.

Today’s Vandergriff Building

Now restored and repurposed, the Vandergriff Building offers premium office space while preserving its historic charm. It stands as a symbol of Arlington’s past and a key part of its vibrant future.
